Brazilian jiu jitsu at Relentless Training Center in Tuscaloosa, AL
In a nutshell, BJJ is a unique, ever-evolving martial art with a strong emphasis on grappling and ground fighting. Jiu Jitsu promotes the philosophy that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves, and win, against a bigger, stronger opponent by using leverage and good technique. Submission holds such as chokes and joint locks are the preferred choice of attack. The goal is to end a fight on the ground with a submission hold.

What most people don't know is that learning the submissions is the easy part; it is the positioning and getting to the submissions that is the hard part. The nature of the art allows for intensive training with a lower risk of injury, which is an obvious advantage for the practitioner. For this and other reasons, the style has had lots of success in Mixed Martial Arts events such as the UFC.

Relentless Training Center welcomes jiu jitsu students of all ages and all skill level. Adults and kids are welcome in our jiu jitsu program.

Our local classes are under the instruction of Wolfpack BJJ Purple Belt Clint McJenkin. The Wolfpack BJJ jiu jitsu instructors have a wealth of experience to pass along and the patience to help you reach your goals - no matter what your current skill level.

Mr. McJenkin was promoted to the rank or Purple belt by the Wolfpack patriarch Professor Charles Dos Anjos.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, like other martial arts, is only as credible as it's hierarchy. The Wolfpack BJJ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is a direct affiliate school of 3rd degree Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Charles Dos Anjos and his Wolfpack program. Professor Charles studied and received his ranking under Grand Master Jurandyr Moura, 8th Degree black belt under George Gracie, aka "Gato Ruivo." Professor Charles is also a black belt in Judo and Shotokan Karate. Grand Master Moura was a teacher of the one biggest vale-tudo fighters on the planet, Ivan Gomes and Euclides Pereira, with more than 400 vale-tudo fights.

Wolfpack BJJ adheres to the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (http://www.ibjjf.org/) rules for training and belting.

Brazilian jiu jitsu is a very safe form of martial arts. It is non-striking, meaning we don't throw punches or kicks. The sport is fast paced and that always brings some risk of injury. But as compared to soccer or football, or even karate and baseball, the likelihood of getting seriously injured in BJJ is very very very low.

NO! At Wolfpack BJJ we just want to do jiu jitsu. The 'money-pit' perception stems from other schools requiring you to buy their gi, buy their patches, pay for their testing procedures, buy their sparring gear, etc. While we can offer you a fantastic gi at a great price (from various brands and manufacturers) we do not require you buy your gi from us. We do have Wolfpack patches for your gi, but we do not require that buy them in order to train. We promote kids according to the striped belt policy of the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. A lot of martial arts programs invented their own belting system in order to charge the parents more for belt testings and things related to that. Wolfpack BJJ does not believe in this method. We have a simple monthly charge for gym dues and we do require our students have groin protection, mouth piece, and proper gi. Some belt testing levels (mainly when changing colors) and most competitions have fees associated with them. But, for the most part, jiu jitsu at Wolfpack BJJ is very affordable and does not require a large financial burden beyond the basic equipment and monthly dues.

In the day and age of video games, most children need more exercise. Brazilian jiu jitsu at Wolfpack BJJ is THE answer.

We welcome children of almost any age, boys and girls.

Brazilian Jiu jitsu training at Wolfpack BJJ is a structured event. We believe in the idea that you have to have the position and gain the control before you can submit your opponent. Each class is divided into warm-up, technique, and live rolling. We train technique on a very repetitive basis and then branch out to counters and combinations so our students gain a thorough knowledge of what to do, what not to do, and how to counter your opponent properly. Jiu jitsu is a game of moves and counter-moves. Every move or technique has a counter. Every position has an escape. Every submission has a defense. These concepts can take a long time to learn and a lifetime to master.

Wolfpack BJJ jiu jitsu students train in a realistic, but safe, environment. Every student at Wolfpack BJJ is treated with great respect, regardless of skill level or experience. We want you to train with us. And we want to see our students grow into great martial artist. So we take the time to help you improve your game.

Wolfpack BJJ has a competition grappling team. Competing in one tournament is the equivalent of 3 to 6 months of training in the gym! Competition is a great way to, not only improve your jiu jitsu, but improve your self. We strongly encourage our students to compete. Of course, competition is a personal choice and choosing to not compete does not have any effect on your individual training.

All of our jiu jitsu students learn using a gi. The gi creates the need to learn technique correctly and effectively. It creates offensive options and requires a solid defensive game. For example, the basic collar choke is a core gi submission which easily translates into "street use" on anyone wearing a shirt or jacket. From time to time we do train without the gi, called no-gi training. The seasoned gi practitioner will feel comfortable with, or without, the gi.

Knowing Brazilian jiu jitsu is not just about chokes and locks, it is much more than that. It is to live and interact with friends. It is also about knowing the history of jiu jitsu since the beginning, how it started, the contradiction, how the traditional jiu jitsu came to Brazil and who developed Brazilian jiu jitsu. Brazilian jiu jitsu is more than a sport of points and limited time, it is a martial art with defense for all attacks. Getting promoted and advancing in ranks is an honor. This is because it takes a long time, years of training, and a high level of trust between the teacher and student. To gain rank in Brazilian jiu jitsu you will need to show respect and all aspects of your life: to your friends, with your family, on the training mat, and outside of the Dojo.

The student who asks about his own promotion or that of a friend is making a mistake. In some schools every time you ask or make any comments about your promotion, you get more distant from attaining the next level.

To truly train Brazilian jiu jitsu you must learn all aspects including your health, your attitude, self defense, takedowns and submissions.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Tuscaloosa, AL - The good wolf and the bad wolf
There is a story of a Native American grandfather talking to his grandson. He explained that we all have two wolves within us. One of the wolves is selfish, controlling, greedy, impatient, restless, cruel, unfocused, undisciplined, and only thinks about immediate gratification. The other is kind, unselfish, compassionate, calm, understanding, patient, focused, confident, disciplined, and thinks long term.

The grandson asks, “Which one wins?

The grandfather asks, “Whichever one you feed.

You may ask, “What does this have to do with Jiu Jitsu?

One really important part of your development in jiu jitsu is how you deal with being tapped. A bad wolf reaction is to want to get revenge. Or to avoid rolling with that person. Or to rationalize what happened, “I had an off day,” or “I was injured,” or “I was not feeling great.”The good wolf reaction is to figure out what you did wrong. You may know what you should have done to prevent or escape the submission. Or you may not know what to do. Either way, you should spend some time repping and drilling techniques that will prevent or defend the submission that you got caught in. And the proper response (good wolf) when you get tapped: “Good job,” and or “Thank you.”

The key to success in any art form and in life is persistence through failure. Every person that has achieved greatness in any endeavor has failed thousands of times. Are you a person who takes responsibility for your actions, doesn’t blame others, make excuses or quit when things get difficult?

Do you see failure as an important component of success? Or are you a person who only focuses on winning and not learning and only looks for immediate gratification. Your response to failure in jiu jitsu, which will happen hundreds to thousands of times, is the repetition of a mental and emotional habit. It shapes your character. It makes you who you are!
